What is this and how do you stop it?

Post by ddunlavy » Tue Jul 24, 2018 2:39 pm

Aluminum coolant manifold from my Model S Roadster.
Obvious leak from mold mark, but also occurs on the inside.
What is the best way to stop it forever?
Looks like some kind of growth after exposed to air for a while.

Electrolis caused by dissimilar metals. . Maybe an annode would help. Like the ones used with model T s with aluminum heads. Cheers, Paul

Clean out the crud, soak it in acetone for a few minutes, allow to dry . . . then seal the mold crack with tape and coat the inside with Kwik-Poly. I've coated the inside of several porous block castings with Kwik-Poly and after over 20 years, they're still on the road with no issues. I also agree with using an anode on early engines constructed like in the N-R-S.

Thanks Paul and Roger. Sounds like a plan.
I didn't mention it, but the 3-4 jug port has a crack on the flat part of the mount. My thought is to use J-B Weld or Devcon on that in a vee'd grove. I don't put much pressure on the sealing surface since I use gray gasket maker to seal.
I'm also going to try, Bruce's fix, for the hold-down bolts.
He had success with v-shaped plummer's washers.
If I can get this fixed, it will be the first time since the restoration.
Thanks again, to both of you!

On one of my N engines the corosion had eaten its way all the way through around the rear flange. I had to make a new flange part (flat disc) and soldered it back to the rest of the pipe. I used the Aluminum welding sticks from Harbor Freight. The aluminum welding with a propane torch worked great. After soldering/welding I ground down the excess - it looks great and works. Must say not a fan or pushing Harborfreight but the product worked.
